Brightlingsea was back in the news for similar reasons in 1995, when the livestock industry attempted to open a new route for live animal exports to the continent. Abattoir closures in Britain had caused cattle and sheep to be transported on ferries, in grim conditions, for slaughter in Europe. When public opinion caused ferry companies to back out, exporters sought less visible alternatives. The Battle of Brightlingsea lasted for most of the year as protestors, mostly local women, prevented ships from loading while riot police piled in. The lorries carried sheep, but also cattle and veal calves, and it was the latter which became symbolic of the affair. The stand-offs ended when the exporters cut their losses, and soon afterwards the saga was forgotten amid the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy – or ‘mad cow disease’ – in Britain. More than 20 years later, the Brexit vote had revived calls to ban live animal exports as part of a changed relationship with the EU.
